Montessorians have long recognized the sensitive period of the absorbent mind for language. However, it has not been widely recognized that babies and very young infants also have the capacity to begin to develop fundamental reading skills. The ability to communicate verbally and to read at a very early age provide toddlers and preschoolers the tools, which will greatly facilitate advanced learning.

Early Reading, Brain Research and the Your Baby Can Read!® System
Infants are prewired at birth to naturally and effortlessly absorb the fundamentals of vocabulary, the prerequisite for speaking and reading. As shown on the Human Brain Development Chart, the sensitive period for language peaks at 8-months. It ends at about 5-6 years. Learning vocabulary and reading will be difficult for a child who misses this sensitive period.
